About The Limestone Lantern

The Limestone Lantern is an independent editorial site about the folklore, local history and recorded ghost stories of Ontario. It looks at how haunted place accounts are collected, told and retold, and at what archives and heritage bodies document about the same places.

What the site covers

Articles appear in two sections. Haunted Places and Local Legends follows well known and lesser known sites, among them Gibraltar Point Lighthouse, Spadina House, the Niagara radio broadcasts and War of 1812 re-enactment traditions. Archives Research and Field Methods explains how a story travels from an oral telling to a printed page, a walking tour script or an archive folder.

How the articles are written

Every text is written from public sources, and those sources are named in the article itself. Accounts are reported as folklore and testimony. No account is presented as paranormal fact. Where a record is incomplete, contradictory or missing, the article says so.

The Toronto and Ontario Ghosts and Hauntings Research Societies are active bodies that the magazine reports about in the third person. The Limestone Lantern organises nothing and sells nothing. All organisations are described in the third person, and no group is presented as a partner of the site.

Who reads it

The site is written for curious readers of Ontario history and folklore, for local historians and genealogists, for walking tour visitors and for students of folklore. You do not need prior knowledge of the subject. Each article gives you the names of the sources it draws on, so you can follow the same trail through an archive or a local collection.
